Abstract
I grew up in a family whose ancestors were civic-minded people, pioneers and ‘scholar farmers’ who settled in America from various parts of Europe. There was an unwritten imperative for me to ‘do’ something meaningful in life. My father was an academic and several of my relatives were involved in education. In their own ways they instilled in me a love for learning. As a child I was an avid reader like my parents.
