Abstract

Having taught eleventh-grade English with an American literature focus for much of my secondary teaching career, Depression-era literature enjoyed a welcome place in my classroom due to the abundance of poignant narratives about one of America’s darkest times. Not only did Americans valiantly encounter bleak economic conditions, they heroically endured the nation’s worst ecological disaster, the Dust Bowl.
