Abstract

The 21st century is shaped by a complex set of factors, and is driven by multiple dynamics. The unsettled world we see today configures a global landscape facing increasing challenges involving global conflict, energy problems, environmental change, food and water insecurity, demographic trends, regional economic connectivity, transnational crimes, as well as border movements (see the focus chapter of this volume, Ambrose, chapter 2, this volume).
