Abstract

A recurrent theme identified in the interviews was the importance of using new information and ideas as starting points for engagement beyond daily routines; information was crucial to getting involved. There was also acknowledgment that it was easy to ignore what was not, or seemed not to be, an immediate concern in daily life. Work, family responsibilities, and other commitments to one’s immediate community may leave little time for information gathering beyond what is necessary.
