Abstract
Often referred to as a rite of passage, the defense is a ritual that marks the transition from student to a full member of the academic tribe. The purpose of the defense is not made clear to students. Is it an exam, where one passes or fails, or is it a celebratory event to publicly unveil years of solitary work? Defenses cause much anxiety for students who approach them because they are unsure if they will pass and this failure will be announced publically.
