A Labour of Love?

Curiosity, Alienation and the Constitution of Academic Character

  • Chapter
Identity Work in the Contemporary University

Part of the book series: Educational Futures: Rethinking Theory and Practice ((EDUFUT,volume 1))

Abstract

This chapter extends research undertaken for the 2012 (Auckland, New Zealand),1 & 2014 (Durham, UK) Academic Identities conferences. Researching for the Auckland conference lead to my ‘discovery’ of the work of the Marxist thinker and psychoanalyst Eric Fromm. This discovery was precipitated by a footnote in Freire (1985) referring to Fromm’s (1964) explanation of the terms biophily and necrophily. Curiosity piqued, I began reading Fromm’s work.
