Abstract
Language, though often taken for granted, has powerful significance. Over the years, the language of those continuing to assert a position of power has created a particular vision of society and of what others should aspire to be. According to scholars, Western terms used to describe indigenous peoples and their histories draw out particular emotions associated with the continuing implications of this time.
