Abstract
For the past two decades the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), sub-Saharan Africa’s largest country, has been the scene of multiple conflicts at the local, national and regional levels, with the five eastern provinces bearing the brunt of the violence. The conflict began in the mid-1990s and has been described as the world’s deadliest since World War II, with a death toll estimated at over 5 million people.
