Abstract

Teachers are encouraged to be vigilant in a classroom setting so they can catch problematic behaviour before it escalates (Kounin, 1970). Reprimands, “logical consequences,” detentions, and other forms of punishment are used as means of enforcing desired behaviour, sometimes without any attempt to look for the wider circumstances accompanying the “infraction.”
