Abstract

Art therapy provides a safe way for people to ‘talk’ about fears, trauma, abuse, and secrets nonverbally, as in the poem Dark Secrets. Art making and therapeutic play is a type of nonverbal communication for children and adults who can’t find the words in therapy. It is how children naturally explore, make sense of, and live in the world.
