Abstract
In US public schools today we face a paradox. Although there is widespread agreement that teacher quality is the most important in-school factor affecting students’ learning and achievement (Hightower et al., 2011; McCaffrey et al., 2003; Rivkin, Hanushek, & Kain, 2005; Rowan, Correnti & Miller, 2002; Wright, Horn, & Sanders, 1997), neoliberal education reform works to repel the best teachers from the profession while simultaneously discouraging promising individuals from entering in the first place.
