Abstract

This chapter uses autobiography to examine the construction of White identities and their implications for anti-racist pedagogy. By reflecting on the development of my own understanding of race, racism and the role of Whiteness, first as a child in rural Ontario, then as a youth in a period of national liberation, as a young traveller, a gay activist and finally as an educator, I hope to cast some light on the development of individual White identities in Canada.
