Abstract
Tensions in teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in Asia are related largely to the different ways knowledge construction and academic communication work in Asia and in the West. These tensions are not unique to Asia. Research shows that there are tensions between local and global orientations to academic practices and communication everywhere, even in the West (see Canagarajah, 2002; Lillis & Curry, 2010).
