Abstract

Marginalized both culturally and physically from the philosophical and political centers of the Soviet Union, especially after its collapse in 1991, the Central Asian Republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan were faced with the task of creating legitimate nation-states as an alternative to indigenous tribal groupings.
