Abstract
On the surface, there is a well-crafted image of public education as a shared public resource which serves all children and youth equally, therefore, equalizing their opportunities later in life. Ideally, schools will transcend race, class, gender, ethnic and other differences, and enable its graduates to achieve desired economic and social mobility, irrespective of their background.
