Abstract

Emmanuel Levinas says, “the face is the mark of the other’s transcendence; it exceeds his or her phenomenological existence and cannot be reduced to representation.” For a specific group of Black women then, the face of a battered Black woman renders them unable or unwilling to recognize her face, yet still feel her pain.
