Cultural Constraints

Experiencing Same-Sex Attraction in Sport and Dance

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Studies in Professional Life and Work ((SPLW))

Abstract

Recent years have seen several high profile men in sport publicly identify themselves as gay. The list includes the likes of Mark Tewkesbury (swimming), John Amaechi (basketball), Gareth Thomas (rugby), Stephen Davies (cricket), Anton Hysen (football) and Matthew Mitcham (diving). These announcements are significant given the historical and cultural backdrop of sport, which Eric Anderson (2005, p. 7) suggests, “remains a bastion of hegemonic masculinity, homophobia, and misogyny.”
