Abstract
In this chapter we propose engaging the premise that technology is the new opiate of the masses. Transhumanism as a movement has provided the science fiction (SF) genre with an internal scaffolding of fear, power, and paranoia in the blinding light of progress. There is a long list of films throughout media history, from the 1916 silent epic 20,000 Leagues under the Sea to the 2012 remake of Total Recall that serve as examples.
