Abstract
The concept of grandparenthood is a relatively new one. Mitchell (2009) describes it as primarily a “post-World War Two phenomenon” and considers the research conducted by Cherlin and Frustenberg (p. 231). This modernization has occurred because of “declines in mortality, falling birth rates, technological advances in travel and long-distance communication, retirement and increased affluence, and more leisure time” (Mitchell, 2009, p. 231).
