Abstract

I grew up as a German in southern Chile, where my parents worked as teacher. Through immigration many Germans worked in southern Chile, where most people were of Mapuche indigenous background. In that context I belonged to a privileged minority of Germans in a very asymmetrical situation. I felt an ‘other’, but was privileged as the ‘other’. Returning to Germany at the age of twelve/thirteen, I again felt as a member of a minority, because I was schooled in Spanish and in a certain way I identified with Chilean and Latin American culture.
