Abstract

I was born in Frankfurt am Main shortly after the Second World War. My parents moved to Hamburg soon after my birth, so Hamburg is my home port – literally and figuratively. My father would have liked me to go to Law School, but at the time I was thinking more about studying Sinology – it had to be something unusual. Theology became that unusual subject – a real surprise because I come from a typical Hamburg family where ‘we are religious without having to go to church every Sunday’.
