Abstract
What Thomas Paine wrote over two centuries ago is more apropos than ever today. Amidst the terror of neoliberalism (Giroux 2004, 2011b, Bauman 2006, Collins et al., 2008, Harvey 2010) world-historic catastrophes unfold, from the financial meltdown of 2008 to the BP Gulf oil disaster of 2010. These events were built on massive infrastructures of deception and illusion: the necessary illusions of unchecked power.
