Abstract
This chapter analyses the development of Singapore’s first primary future school, the challenges faced in their development and the critical factors that ensure its sustainability. Narrative inquiry was used as the method of research in this study as a way of understanding and inquiring through “collaboration between researcher and participants, over time, in a place or series of places, and in social interaction with milieus” (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000). The pioneer planning team went through a series of critical processes including developing clear philosophies, a sound framework and identifying a strong core team. They also experienced major tensions including negotiating institutional barriers, overcoming resistant staff and developing and maintaining quality staff. To sustain the innovative practices, the school emphasised leveraging on both emergent and matured technologies and focused on practitioner research. Systemic and paradigmatic shifts must occur to ensure the sustainability of future schools.
