Abstract
The essential themes of progressive education with respect to teaching and the activities of public school in democratic society were formulated by Horace Mann (1796-1859) in the 1830 s. He was an educational thinker who examined the relationship between education and democracy in a modern society, i.e. the United States. Mann's footsteps have been followed by several later representatives of progressive education, such as Francis Parker, William James, Jane Addams, John Dewey, George H. Mead and Sidney Hook.
