Abstract

The activities suggested in this chapter are intended for use with lower secondary school students. The Australian Curriculum: Mathematics states that students in lower secondary school should “investigate the relationship between features of circles such as circumference, area, radius and diameter and generalise these to solve problems involving circumference and area” and “use formulas to solve problems involving circumference and area” (ACARA, 2010a, p. 39). In the US, the NCTM (2000) recommends a similar mix of topics in its Geometry Standard (p. 232) and Measurement Standard (p. 240) for Years 6 to 8. As well it suggests that students “recognize and use connections among mathematical ideas” in its Connections Standard across all year levels (p. 402).
