Abstract
This paper was first presented at a conference organised by the Counselling and Society Research Team of the University of Edinburgh, in Edinburgh, in June 2003. It begins with a thematic summary of my personal therapy, as an illustration of the case I go on to make for counselling as a form of personal and social action.
