Abstract

This study employed qualitative methodology following a multiple lifehistory/ case-study participant-researcher design (Bogdan & Biklen, 2003; Cresswell, 2007; Hitchcock & Hughes, 1995). The study was grounded in both a constructivist paradigm that holds that the purpose of inquiry is to gain understanding of the various constructions people have of their world, an approach that is especially important for research on women and other under-represented groups (Guba & Lincoln, 1989; Harding, 1987; Hartsock, 1987); and standpoint theory —a feminist epistemology that makes explicit the value of the relational perspective and collective vantage point of the other (e.g., marginalized and/or oppressed groups) (Harding, 1987; Hartsock, 1987; Hill Collins, 1997, 2000).
