Abstract
I took the lorry out to the polytechnic for an interview during my lunch break in March 1987 and it seemed like another world. I thought it would be hard to get in but the interview went well and I realised about half way through the discussion with Dr Boxall that he was telling me what I would be doing when I started the BA in Humanities course. When I asked him if I definitely had a place on the course he seemed surprised: “Oh yes, I thought you knew that. I thought you’d come for a chat before you decided” he said. “Decided what?” I asked “Where you were going” he answered.
