Abstract
As a young learner the act of making meaning was mystifying to me. In the summer after I managed to fail most of my high school grade eleven courses, I enrolled in the army reserves. There wasn’t anything altruistic about this. It paid well. What I discovered was that if I simply did what I was told I could be remarkably successful. If I wanted it to be, the world was a very simple place after all.
