Understanding Older Adult Learners and Education

Sociological Perspectives
Part of the International Issues in Adult Education book series (ADUL, volume 7)

This chapter is concerned with developing an analysis of older people engaged in learning and educational pursuits from a variety of sociological viewpoints. It is important at the outset to acknowledge that there is no single sociological perspective. The discipline of sociology has several traditions, historically contextualised, that provide us with insights into why older adult learners behave as they do (and why, on occasion, they may resist dominant discourses).
