Abstract
This chapter sets the background context to the field of older adult learning. It offers a concise introduction to the key characteristics surrounding the study of ageing, older adults, and later life. First, we consider the impact of demographic changes during the twentieth century on the national and international population structures. However, ageing is more than simply a demographic phenomenon, and short overviews of its social, biological, and psychological components are also discussed.
