Abstract
Teachers worldwide are currently experiencing ‘difficult times’ as their work is assailed, prevailed upon, reformed and restructured almost beyond recognition by forces bent upon devolution, marketisation, de-professionalisation, and intensification (Smyth, 1998). All these are impacts of economic and political considerations that governments are placing on the importance of the roles of education and teachers in society.
