Abstract
Whilst I acknowledge that the subject did not exist 500 years ago, try nevertheless, to imagine a design and technology classroom at that time. The practical skills taught at school during this period were restricted to the crafts or trades associated with writing, reading and record keeping as required by clerks for example. Skills for trades involving bodily effort, such as for cooks, tailors, masons, wheelwrights or blacksmiths, were not taught at school but by apprenticeship (Orme, 2006).
