Abstract

Visual culture and the media dominate a large part of current society’s interactions in public and private settings. It is essential that students be taught visual literacy, so that they develop the ability to think critically about the media and how it affects their lives. Media activists are artists that produce artwork, usually in the form of ‘subvertisements’, using media advertising techniques that challenge the cultural influence of commercialism. Media activists are driven by the idea that they can use their artwork in a similar fashion as propaganda and voice their opinions on issues.
