Abstract

I have the best job in the world. I fell into a summer position at a childcare center 27 years ago. It was my first real job. At the time, it was just a summer job. Although it was never my plan at the time, it has become my life’s work. The work has been challenging, rewarding, and inspirational. I have been a front-line staff member, a supervisor, and a director. I have seen my “kids” grow up, return to work with me as staff members, and even have children of their own under my care. I have seen them succeed and fail and often I have been there to help them find their way. Out of all the many aspects of my work, the things which have easily meant the most to me and have impacted my life in the most profound ways have been what I have learned through my interactions and adventures with children. My work has not been without challenges. One particular challenge is the fact that I am a male. My work environment is a challenge because I have chosen to work in a field that is dominated by women and is often viewed as the work of females.
