Abstract

Afghanistan is a landlocked country with an area of 647,500 sq km and a population of 31.88 million people (July 2007 est.) It has been devastated by three decades of conflict which destroyed physical and institutional structures and tore up the social fabric of the nation. The education and training infrastructure in the country has also been greatly decimated in terms of both physical and human capital. The situation was at its lowest point under the Taliban regime.
