In the family Plagiorchiidae, 39 genera are enlisted; among them only 1 genus, Plagiorchis, is known to infect humans, and overall human cases are very few in number. Five species of Plagiorchis, namely, P. muris, P. javensis, P. philippinensis, P. harinasutai, and P. vespertilionis, are involved as zoonotic species. P. muris was detected from 3 human infections including 1 experimental infection; P. javensis was reported from 4 human infections; P. philippinensis was found in only 1 human case; P. harinasutai was diagnosed from 7 human infections; and P. vespertilionis was reported only in 1 human case. The mode of human infections with these flukes is presumed to be accidental eating of insect larvae or fish. The geographical distribution of P. muris and P. vespertilionis is wide, but that of P. javensis (Indonesia), P. philippinensis (the Philippines), and P. harinasutai (Thailand) is confined to limited localities.
