Gymnophallids

Abstract

Among the gymnophallids (family Gymnophallidae), only 1 species (Gymnophalloides seoi) is known to infect humans and animals. The major symptoms due to G. seoi infection include abdominal discomfort and indigestion but in severe cases pancreatitis and diabetes may be accompanied. Human infections with this fluke occur by ingestion of raw oysters infected with the metacercariae. Its geographical distribution is limited to southern parts of Korea.
