Among the fasciolids (family Fasciolidae), only 2 genera (Fasciolopsis and Protofasciola) are known to be intestinal flukes. In the genus Fasciolopsis, only 1 species Fasciolopsis buski is recognized to be taxonomically valid. Only F. buski is known to infect humans and pigs in South and Southeast Asia. Human infections with this fluke occur by ingestion of raw aquatic vegetation or food plants contaminated with the metacercariae. Its geographical distribution extends from China (including Taiwan) to Thailand, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Cambodia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
