Notes

  1. 1.

These research projects are: (i) ‘Research and dissemination of actions related to the question of multifunctionality of family farming and territorial development in Brazil’, a project coordinated by Renato Maluf and Maria José Carneiro of CPDA/UFRRJ; (ii) ‘The multifunctionality of agriculture at the table: food habits and self-consumption, identity and social reproduction strategies of family farms’, a project coordinated by Renata Menasche (UFPel, PGDR/UFRGS); and (iii) the ANR project ‘Formulating sustainable agricultural development policies in their contexts: building institutional trade-offs and temporal adjustments between the global and the local’ (Propocid), coordinated by Philippe Bonnal (ART-Dev, CIRAD) and Renato Maluf (CPDA/UFRRJ).

  2. 2.

The municipality is the local governance level of the Brazilian federal system which consists of three levels: nation, state, and municipality. The municipality is similar to the French commune due to its local character, but differs from it in the electoral system and the level of responsibility. Indeed, the municipality, like the other two levels, has its own responsibilities in terms of executive, judicial and legislative powers.

  4. 4.

According to Renk (2009), in Rio Grande do Sul state, the term caboclo is relatively vague. It designates any person of diverse origins (fugitive slave, half-breed, etc.) who differs from migrants of German, Italian or Polish origin.

  5. 5.

The basic cycle corresponds to primary and secondary school levels. It ends with a level equivalent to the completion of year 10 in the UK, the troisième level in France or ninth grade in the US.

  6. 6.

In the light of this ban, Menasche and Schmitz (2007) observed a common practice among farmers under contract with the agro-industry of raising poultry and pigs for self-consumption without the knowledge of the industry, in buildings that are hidden or located at a neighbour’s place. These livestock breeders refuse to consume animals that are fattened according to industry guidelines, preferring to use traditional livestock techniques and animal feed to produce livestock for self-consumption.
