Abstract

Aniba canellila (Kunth) Mez. known as “casca-preciosa” (precious wood) is an important and historical species in the Amazon region. It is a large tree endemic to South America. It is a medicinal plant used in the Amazon traditional folk medicine. Monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and benzenoids are classes of compounds present in the essentials oils of A. canellila. Of special interest is 1-nitro-2-phenylethane, the major constituent, with cardiovascular, fungistatic, cytotoxicity and antileishmanial activities. Methyl-eugenol, another important constituent, presents antispasmodic, hypotensive, anesthetic, cytotoxic, and genotoxic activities. The information summarized in this chapter intends to serve as a reference tool to chemistry and biological activities of the essential oil obtained from A. canellila.
