Abstract
The Discovery Coast Atlantic Forest Reserves, located on the east coast of Brazil, consist of eight separate protected areas containing representative remnants of the rainforest that covered the coast of Brazil (Atlantic Forest), and also by a type of coastal shrubland vegetation called “resting,” associated with the Atlantic Forest. The rainforests of Brazil’s Atlantic coast are the world’s richest in terms of biodiversity. The landscape is characterized by coastal tablelands that form seacliffs, as well as by sandy beaches, beach rocks, mangrove swamps, lagoons, and coral reefs. The Discovery Coast was the first landscape sighted by the Portuguese when they arrived in Brazil in 1500 and has an important meaning to the national heritage.
