Abstract

As America elevates its efforts to improve its well-being, arguably nothing is more important to these struggles than what is taking place – for better or worse – in its cities. Drawing upon and inspired by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, a dataset of over 2.3 million U.S. adults interviewed on an ongoing basis since 2008, the value of thriving in all five essential elements of well-being (purpose, social, financial, community, and physical) will be explained, along with the crucial roles that leadership and culture play in well-being development. Also explored will be the factors that sets the highest well-being communities apart for all others, and what we can learn – and apply – from these communities that have best created for their residents the foundation of a life well lived.
