Cross-Border Cooperation: A Key Towards Better Preparedness for Nuclear and Radiological Threats

Abstract

This article gives an overview of joint efforts done under a few NATO-supported projects which were implemented at different times in different regions: the South Caucasus, Central Asia, Belarus (the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone) and undertaken in the Euro-Arctic region, too, with the goal to improve and consolidate the cross-border cooperation in emergency preparedness and radiation protection, joint risk assessments and exercises as well as to enhance public awareness and knowledge in cooperation regions. The article also addresses some common challenges in cross-border cooperation pinpointing issues that need to be better harmonized for better international preparedness.
