Abstract
The development and use of dioramas is reviewed in relation to changes in scientific approaches to nature and the evolution of displays in natural history museums. Dioramas may appear obsolete in comparison with modern films, television and digital displays, but they still retain important advantages. Their effectiveness and limitations are compared with those of still photography.
