Abstract
Polyhydroxy compounds with the appropriate stereochemistry, including sugars, react with sodium silicate. The resulting complexes contain pentacoordinate silicon or, at higher pH, hexacoordinate silicon. These complexes are stable under these highly basic conditions. In the case of sugars, the reacting species has the five-membered furanato structure. Sugars too small to form the five-membered ring (C2, C3) oligomerize under the conditions to form C4–C6 sugars, which are sequestered as silicates. These reactions provide a model for the prebiotic synthesis of sugars.
