The Road to Successful Aging: Older Adults and Their Families in Japan

Successful Aging

Abstract

In this chapter, we review the literature on the Japanese family to illustrate the link between familial relationships and successful aging, focusing on the interplay between such interactions and social circumstances. Common themes in the previous literature include (1) Japanese families, (2) the influence of familial relationships on successful aging, and (3) family caregiving. Regarding the first topic, which encompasses familial structures and norms, including their changes over time, we delineate the current social problems that affect Japanese families. Older adults’ reliance on family is the focus of the second topic. Since family is their main source of social support, family influences older adults’ physical and mental health and successful aging, though their social networks have broadened in recent times to include friends and acquaintances. However, emerging social issues—such as elder abuse—highlight the negative aspects of the contemporary family. Finally, we discuss family care and investigate the complex relationships and difficulties caused by caregiving. However, because the interplay between the family and social environment has not been fully examined, it is necessary to consider the effects of social factors on families in order to facilitate successful aging among older Japanese adults.
