Abstract

Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench, the purple cone flower is one of the world’s most important medicinal herbs and active ingredients of purple cone flower are caffeic acid derivatives namely caftaric acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, cynarin, echinacoside and cichoric acid. Efforts have been made in the recent past for the production of caffeic acid derivatives from adventitious root cultures. Bioreactor cultures have been established for large-scale production of biomass and bioactive compounds and various physiological parameters affecting the biomass and accumulation of caffeic acid derivatives have been investigated. Advances in adventitious root cultures of Echinacea purpurea for the production of bioactive compounds have been summarized in this review.
