Abstract
Electives have long been an integral and well-established component of medical educational programs in the United States. Beyond the year 4 electives traditionally targeted at career exploration, there has been growing interest in electives designed for enrichment and in elective experiences in years 1 through 3. This chapter provides an opportunity to consider electives in medical education as an important and often under-recognized component of the required curriculum.
