Shepherding and Strength: Teaching Evolution in American Christian Schools

Abstract

Evolution is often a difficult topic to teach, and issues of faith can make it even more difficult for students and their teachers. Many faith-based schools in the U.S. face a cultural disapproval of the learning of evolution, particularly from the churches their students attend. What would the teaching of evolution look like if teachers in faith-based schools targeted the teaching of evolution and the nurturing of their students’ faith? This chapter reports interviews with 12 teachers who have determined to do both. They teach evolution as accepted science, and they actively shepherd their students through difficult issues arising at the nexus of faith and science. These teachers show how a pastoral approach in the science classroom can successfully intertwine the teaching of evolution with the care of children’s souls.
